The impact of gadgets on our health

Modern society today cannot be imagined without gadgets – smartphones, tablets, smartwatches, etc. Undoubtedly, they make our life easier and diversified, but we still do not have a clear idea of what effect these devices have on us.

According to the World Health Organization, more than 1.5 billion people around the world use smartphones and other devices every day, and the average user checks their smartphone at least 150 times a day. The mass enthusiasm for electronic devices began relatively recently – in the last 10 – 15 years, therefore, an unambiguous answer about the effect on human health has not yet been received. Indeed, this topic is currently one of the most popular among scientists around the world. In their opinion, the effect of gadgets on a person is very diverse and has a combined character – this is both the effect of electromagnetic radiation and an excessive load on the visual analyzer due to the size of the screen and other parameters of the devices. And also – spoiled posture, psychological problems, and, finally, the environmental safety of the material from which the gadget was made. As shown by the results of recent studies, at least 70% of people, in fact, with active use of their gadgets, suffered from constant pain in the shoulders, joints of the hands, neck, and back. It is quite easy to explain this from an anatomical point of view – you sit for a long time in a bent position, while the pressure on your intervertebral discs is twice as high as in a normal position. Sad statistics indicate a significant (up to 60%) increase in the number of young people aged 16 to 24 with some kind of spinal problems. If recently you have been suffering from increased fatigue and “causeless” headache, perhaps the reason lies precisely in this – the head tilted towards the phone or computer screen interferes with the normal blood supply to the brain. Another companion of active users of electronic screens is low physical activity, and this is a direct path to obesity and, of course, diseases of the heart and blood vessels. In addition, the electromagnetic radiation from your gadget can lead to a decrease in the concentration of hemoglobin in red blood cells – the main “carrier” of oxygen, which is manifested by tachycardia, heart murmurs, and other disorders. As scientists have found out, the electromagnetic radiation of a smartphone degrades the quality of sperm, slowing down sperm motility by 8% (and this is already a lot!). But, fortunately, this negative impact is temporary – unless you carry your phone in your pants pocket all the time.

No less anxiety among specialists is caused by a whole bunch of psychological gadget-dependent states, which can rightfully be considered not only a medical but also a social problem. Ironically, new communication devices are making people feel lonely and isolated. Scientists have determined that young people spend many hours every day looking at their phones and waiting for messages from friends, and their absence is extremely worrying. Depression, insomnia, decreased concentration, anorexia – this is not a complete list of serious medical and social problems that adolescents may face.

But are gadgets so much to blame that we feel lonely and abandoned, ruining our health? Here, doctors are unanimous: in order to be less dependent on electronic technology, alternate the use of your gadgets with other activities, take more care of yourself, children and do not use phones in situations that require concentration. Of course, in order to keep up with the times, you will not be able to do without them altogether. Indeed, for all their harmfulness, gadgets will not let us get lost, they will always prompt the necessary information, allow us to see the world, and much more. It depends only on ourselves whether they will contribute to our development or degradation. So the advice, in this case, is very simple: use it, but don’t abuse it!
